Silver Lake Dunes has to be one of my favourite places to shoot, not just in Michigan, but perhaps anywhere I’ve ever done a shoot. I’ve been lucky enough to shoot their somewhat regularly since moving to the US and it has never disappointed. The dunes are constantly evolving; moving, shifting and drifting so they never look the same. Then there is the light. Oh the light! In the space of an hour the light can go from stark and bright, with harsh shadows, to a blaze of red and orange as the sun dips over the horizon and sinks into lake Michigan, leaving you with the bluest of dusks that cools you down as the quickly chilling sand flows between your toes.
It is a place to bring your loved one. To jump off dunes hand in hand, or to shelter from the breeze that whips up the sand, nestle in close to one another behind an ancient long gone tree. It is a place to free up your mind and to tap into that childhood joy of being in the outdoors. Just for a moment you are free of any responsibility. To have fun, feel in love, to wander and be connected to one of the most beautiful places on earth.
